Founded by Aliyah American Horse, a poet, artist, and advocate for Indigenous communities, this blog is a place where I share my poetry, creative process, and updates on my journey to create The Sleepy Poet bookstore.

About Aliyah American Horse

I’m Aliyah American Horse, a poet, artist, and community advocate from the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe. Born in Utah and raised in Gordon, Nebraska, my life has been shaped by both challenges and the beauty of rural life. The experiences I’ve gone through—family struggles, personal growth, and a deep connection to my Indigenous roots—are the heart of my poetry.

As the Nebraska Youth Poet Laureate and the Midwest Youth Poet Laureate, I’ve had the honor of sharing my work with audiences across the country. My poems touch on themes of identity, resilience, cultural preservation, and the realities of being Indigenous in a modern world. One of my poems, “Shed No Tears, Unci,” addresses the painful reality of missing and murdered Indigenous women, blending personal grief with collective trauma.

In addition to my poetry, I’m passionate about advocating for Indigenous youth, showing them that their stories matter and that their voices are powerful.

I’m also in the process of creating The Sleepy Poet bookstore—an exciting venture that will blend books, art, and vintage treasures into a community-centered space. The store will be a reflection of my vision to uplift and celebrate Indigenous and local culture, while also creating a place for storytellers and creatives to connect.
